Availability Heuristics

Frequency and probability are assessed by the ease with which instances or occurrences can be recalled.

Biases

If you recently heard news about several airplane crashes, you might think that air travel is very dangerous. This is because instances of airplane crashes are easily recalled. In reality, air travel is statistically much safer than car travel, but because car accidents are less sensational and less often reported, they might not be as readily recalled.

Anchoring and Adjustment Heuristic

People make estimates by starting from an initial value (anchor) and making adjustments, which are typically insufficient.

Biases

  • Insufficient Adjustment: Different starting points lead to different estimates biased towards the initial values. (Negotiating salaries, starting at $50K)
